Hedibert Freitas Lopes, Professor at Insper, currently teaching at Arizona State University, has just been named a fellow of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (Isba). The institution promotes the development and application of Bayesian analysis to problem solving in science and government. He is the first Brazilian nominated to that position.Lopes was chosen for his significant contributions in research using Bayesian methodology, especially in time series analysis, latent variable model, and Bayesian computing, with applications in econometrics, finance, and related areas. In addition, ISBA highlighted the excellent impact of Professor Lopes’ teaching at universities and his role in the international statistics community.
Lopes joined Insper in 2013 to be a professor of statistics and econometrics. Previously, he worked for 10 years, firstly as an Assistant, and then as an Associate Professor of econometrics and statistics at the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago. He holds a PhD in Statistics and Decision Sciences from the Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences, Duke University (2000) and a Master’s in Statistics from the Institute of Mathematics, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1994).
Professor Lopes has recently been promoting data science in his role as the Coordinator of Insper’s Data Science and Decision Research Center. He has more than 70 scientific articles published in some of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world, such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association and the American Economic Review. He is a reviewer in more than 30 international journals, has given 200 major lectures and taught 25 mini-courses and tutorials over the last decade.
