In this paper, I put forth an advanced model of psychological ownership (PO) that explains PO’s positive and negative consequences and then apply it to the area of the family business. I identify PO’s positive consequences in the three PO domains related respectively to the target, other and self: (1) amelioration orientation; (2) achievement orientation; and (3) commitment orientation as well as PO’s negative consequences: (1) destructive territoriality; (2) destructive personality and (3) target destruction. Subsequently, I examine how PO’s positive and negative consequences affect the family business.
