Abstract:
In this paper the determinants of victimization by burglary/larceny are assessed through a theoretical model that accounts for investments in self-protection done by individuals. We used a household survey for São Paulo state-Brazil (Pesquisa de Condição de Vida–1998), and contrary to previous literature we found evidence supporting that city size is not the most important factor for victimization likelihood, but the victim’s characteristics (income, education, etc) by far are the most important factors. Moreover, crime and city size don’t have an increasing monotonic relation and the same happens for victimization likelihood and the victim’s income, which confirms our theoretical model predictions.
