He had never returned until recently, when he spent a few days at the  [Grainger College of Engineering](https://grainger.illinois.edu/)  of the US institution, to acclimatize.   Now, Soares travels again on the 28th of July to settle in the region for an entire semester. From July to November, the associate professor at Insper will teach Game Development to UIUC Bachelor’s degree students in Computer Science. “ [Eric Gene Shaffer](https://cs.illinois.edu/about/people/department-faculty/shaffer1)  will lead the first half and I will lead the second. He is excited, thinking about sharing the classes online later”, says Soares, referring to his colleague on the mission, who is a professor and associate dean for Undergraduate Programs at the Grainger College of Engineering.   In 2024, the same course will be taught at Insper, for fifth semester undergraduate students in  [Computer Science](https://www.insper.edu.br/graduacao/ciencia-da-computacao/) . “This teaching partnership brings me closer to their labs, especially the  [Center for Immersive Computing](https://immerse.illinois.edu/) , dedicated to research in augmented, virtual and mixed reality, collectively extended reality, digital twins, metaverse, spatial computing and computer audition”, comments Soares.   Productive partnership   Soares is enthusiastic about active learning, researching and applying project-based learning strategies, and is the leader of the Engineering Education research group at Insper, and the coordinator of the  [Final Engineering Project](https://www.insper.edu.br/pfe/o-que-e/)  and the  [Virtual Reality and Digital Games Laboratory](https://www.insper.edu.br/laboratorio-realidade-virtual-e-jogos-digitais/)  from the Brazilian institution. He believes that the experience with the Grainger College of Engineering can add new experiences, both for students at the US institution and for those at Insper.   “These are very different realities. The UIUC classes are much larger, which led the school to invest in very interesting hybrid experiences, reconciling computer graphics and virtual reality applied to education”, says Soares, who, throughout his professional career, was a professor at the Department of IT at PUC-Rio, where he developed several research projects with Petrobras, and was in charge of the design and construction of the Digital Cave (Cave), the first cubic multi-projection system in Brazil.   New fronts   [Soares](https://cs.illinois.edu/50220)  is one of five Insper professors to spend a semester at Urbana-Champaign. Igor Montagner, Luciano Silva and Rafael Corsi Ferrão have already been there — for the current term, Andrew Kurauchi is also temporarily settling in the region. They developed a series of projects in partnership with the US institution.   The   [partnership](https://www.insper.edu.br/internacional/parceria-com-a-universidade-de-illinois/)  between the two institutions is about to complete one year. And the proposal is to advance on new fronts of interaction, reinforcing research actions and the collaboration program and expanding activities in curriculum development, including student exchange programs, which began with the selection of five Insper students to participate in the University of Illinois 2023 Summer Program. “We both have a lot to learn from this interaction”, says Soares."}]
