Established in 1974, the HES brings together researchers from around the world, organizes annual meetings, and maintains publications and programs to encourage research in the area.   Duarte is only the second Latin American to occupy this position. At the end of his two-year term, starting in June 2025, he will automatically assume the presidency of the entity. The first Latin American to reach a leadership position in the HES was Brazilian Mauro Boianovsky, a former professor at the University of Brasília who passed away in 2024.   Duarte's connection with the HES is longstanding. He attended his first conference in 2004, when he was still a doctoral student at Duke University in the United States. "It was at the HES that I was formed as a researcher. The people who serve as models for me were members and presidents of this association. Reaching this position is an enormous honor, a very significant recognition from my peers," he said.   The HES emerged at a transformative moment for economic science when areas like the history of economic thought and economic history began to lose space at major discipline meetings. Since then, the society has held a congress in the Northern Hemisphere summer, sponsors sessions at the annual Allied Social Sciences Association meeting — the world's largest event for economists — and publishes the  Journal of the History of Economic Thought , published by Cambridge University Press. Additionally, it offers awards and supports young researchers.   As Vice President, Duarte will participate in the executive committee, the body responsible for all association decisions, and will be responsible for organizing the thematic sessions of the winter meetings of the HES in 2027 and 2028.     Academic Profile   Born in Ribeirão Preto (SP), Duarte graduated in Economics from the University of São Paulo (1998), obtained a master's degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2001), and a doctoral degree from Duke University (2007). From 2018 to 2025, he was co-editor of the  Journal of the History of Economic Thought  and has been part of the editorial board of prestigious journals in his field.   His journey includes recognitions such as the Costantino Bresciani Turroni-AISPE Award (2007), awarded by the Associazione Italiana per la Storia del Pensiero Economico for the best work presented by a young researcher, and the Young Researcher Award (2015) from the European Society for the History of Economic Thought.   Duarte's research focuses on the recent history of economic science, especially from the post-World War II period. “The technical and formal economic science we have today stems a lot from what happened during and after the war. My interest is to understand how economists began to produce and justify mathematical and econometric models, both in academia and in public policy formulation, such as those adopted by central banks,” he explains.   The professor also shows interest in the development of economic science in Brazil and the historical connections between national academia and research centers abroad.     Role at Insper   At Insper since 2019, Duarte teaches the history of economic thought in the undergraduate program in  [Economics](https://www.insper.edu.br/pt/cursos/graduacao/economia)  and Macroeconomics in the  [Professional Master’s in Economics](https://www.insper.edu.br/pt/cursos/pos-graduacao/mestrado/economia) . Besides teaching, he maintains research activity and participation in the international academic community. He acknowledges the provind ground, with encouragement for research and interaction with colleagues and students, that Insper offers which has contributed to his role in international organizations such as the HES.   For Duarte, taking on the Vice Presidency of a society that has accompanied him since the start of his career is also an opportunity to contribute to the appreciation of the history of economic thought in the international landscape and in Brazil.   “It is a great joy and responsibility. The HES is a space for dialogue between different research traditions, and I hope we can continue strengthening this field, training new generations of researchers, and keeping alive the reflection on the ideas and practices that have shaped — and continue to shape — the economy.”"}]
