Alumnus of the Doctoral Program in Business Economics from Insper, Thomaz Teodorovicz has been appointed Assistant Professor to the CBS Executive Foundation Chair at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in Denmark. This is a remarkable achievement for a professional with less than three years of experience. According to the Danish school, one of the international references in the field of Business Administration, Teodorovicz is the youngest professor to receive a chair from the institution, which acknowledges the impactful academic trajectory that the researcher has achieved in the field of strategic management, regardless of his age. The chair program aims to strengthen research and education at CBS by retaining its best academic talents.

Teodorovicz arrived at the institution in August 2022, assuming the position of faculty member in the Department of Strategy and Innovation. At that time, he had completed three years of post-doctorate studies at Harvard Business School in the United States, his first research job after completing the program at Insper in 2019. “This chair, funded by a non-profit private foundation, signals that CBS believes in my potential as a researcher, particularly to study how companies and their leaders can reconcile their competitive strategies with generating positive social impact, which is precisely my research agenda,” says Teodorovicz.

The initial steps in this agenda were taken during his time at Insper, motivated by the interaction with professors Sérgio Lazzarini and Sandro Cabral (advisor and co-advisor of the doctoral program) and with several colleagues who followed the same research line. Teodorovicz explains: “Insper's Center for Strategy is becoming a recognized center for its ability to train top international researchers in how private institutions can address social problems. This agenda, emerging from Insper, is propelled by several Brazilians with ties to the school — such as Leandro Nardi (HEC Paris), Fernando Deodato (FGV, with a stint at the University of Oxford), Leandro Pongeluppe (Wharton School), and Carlos Inoue (University of Illinois) — and has international relevance. This means that Insper’s training exceeds all expectations by producing individuals who, upon graduating from a Ph.D. or M.Sc. program in Brazil, can earn a chair at a renowned international institution with less than three years of professional experience, breaking certain barriers that exist in the academic market.”

There is also the perspective of personal fulfillment. “As the first student to graduate from Insper’s doctoral program, I always felt a lot of pressure to demonstrate Insper’s potential in producing students as good as those from institutions like Harvard and MIT. I am pleased to see how much serious academic work can be recognized by our peers,” says Teodorovicz. “Academic work demands a lot of dedication and is sometimes filled with challenges, especially if you come from the Global South. But it’s worth it when this effort is recognized by the academic community and the business community around the world.”

An affiliated researcher at the Insper Metricis, Teodorovicz investigates how organizations can reconcile their objectives of achieving economic returns with solving social problems. In particular, he focuses on strategic management, education, and human development. Teodorovicz has studied the allocation of professors in Brazilian private education, researching how the wave of mergers and acquisitions has changed the role of human capital in the acquired universities. In another study, he examined a program to attract qualified remote workers to the city of Tulsa in the United States to understand the mechanisms that keep these professionals in the city and generate local wealth.

10 years of the Doctoral Program

As it celebrates a decade of existence, Insper's Doctoral Program in Business Economics consolidates itself as an innovative and essential program for the training of researchers and professionals with high analytical and strategic capabilities. Launched in 2015 with an unprecedented approach in Brazil, the program stands out for exploring the intersection between Economics and Business Administration, preparing its students to face complex challenges in both the private and public sectors. With rigorous quantitative training and a curriculum that integrates theory and practice, the program aligns with the best international schools where applied economics to business is a consolidated and constantly evolving field.

Over these ten years, the program has strengthened itself with a distinctive academic proposal, structured in three tracks – Strategy & Marketing, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics & Finance – and supported by an excellent faculty, with a strong international presence. Furthermore, the internationalization of the program, with classes taught in English and extensive connections with foreign institutions, has expanded the reach and relevance of the doctorate, attracting talents from various parts of the world. This global exchange contributes to the training of professionals capable of applying cutting-edge scientific methods to solve economic and managerial problems, positively impacting both the academic environment and the corporate world, as well as public policy formulation.
