Insper has received the “Socially Responsible Institution Seal” from the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Holders (ABMES for its acronym in Portuguese) for its participation in the 18th edition of the Social Responsibility Campaign of Private Higher Education. The certification is valid for one year and it can be used by the institution through October next year.

“This is recognition of Insper’s dedication to creating positive impacts on society with teaching, research and extension”, says Professor Priscila Claro, leader of the Center for Sustainability and Business, and coordinator of Social Responsibility and Extension at Insper. She oversees the coordination of corporate social responsibility activities, in addition to reporting the results to obtain the ABMES seal. “This is the seventh consecutive year that we participate in the campaign and get the seal. This makes us very happy and honored, and our goal is to keep up the performance.”

According to the professor, the award comes from Insper’s support for the development of organizational practices, public policies and inclusive citizenship for its stakeholders — therefore, looking out for diversity in academic activities. The actions put together by Insper were evaluated jointly by the award organizers.

The ABMES initiative aims to display the social projects of higher education institutions in the areas of education, health, culture, environment, among others. Those volunteer activities with a focus on society are implemented by institutions with the participation of several professionals, such as professors, technicians and volunteers, inspired by the principles of solidarity and citizenship.

“The higher education private sector gathers over 6 million students and, with them, a great potential for collaboration and social transformation. It is a commitment that shows how higher education institutions care about the people who make up the academic community, local and global societies, the environment and the labor market, while based on ethical, economic, cultural and political perspectives. Higher education institutions are accountable for graduating about 70% of professors all over Brazil, professionals who have become real heroes [during the pandemic], by ensuring that classes would continue from their houses while schools remained closed.”, wrote Celso Niskier, executive secretary of the Forum of Representative Entities of Private Higher Education and president of ABMES, in an article published in the Correio Braziliensenewspaper.

Law No 10,861/2014

This legislation established the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes for its acronym in Portuguese) with the aim to create parameters that would make it possible to improve the quality of higher education. Social responsibility is one of the mandatory institutional dimensions in that assessment.

The main aspect of that dimension is the contribution of the higher education institution as to social inclusion, economic and social development, the defense of the environment, of the cultural memory, artistic production and cultural heritage.

Sinaes looks at institutions and programs, but also at student performance. In addition to social responsibility, the assessment process considers aspects such as teaching, research, extension, institution management and faculty. For that, Sinaes gathers information from the Brazilian National Student Performance Examination (Enade for its acronym in Portuguese), as well as from institutional and program assessments. All those inputs act as institutional guidance for higher education establishments and are used to lay the foundation for public policies.
