This was the second visit by the representatives to São Paulo, taking place within the context of a joint project between the two institutions funded by the British Academy. In addition to continuing the work aimed at improving research management capacity and transforming support for sustainable and equitable international collaborations in data science between Brazil and Scotland, the visit advanced the integration between the University of Aberdeen, Insper’s Center for Data and Artificial Intelligence (CDIA), and the Research Office. “This is the second visit of our British Academy-funded project between the University of Aberdeen and Insper, called ‘INSPERation: Advancing Research Management Capacity for International Excellence in Data Science’,” explains Sharon, who outlines the two workstreams that make up the initiative. “The first focuses on enhancing the technical infrastructure, as well as comprehensive documentation and compliance within the CDIA, to align Insper’s infrastructure with UK standards based on the SATRE model (Standard Architecture for a Trusted Research Environment). This will increase compliance, security, and efficiency in managing data linkage research and enable us to demonstrate to data providers and the public that we can safely facilitate data linkage research collaborations between the University of Aberdeen and Insper.” During the previous visit to Insper, in September 2024, Katie conducted a SATRE assessment of the CDIA. “We were impressed with the progress the center has made since then, particularly in establishing its new, purpose-built facilities,” she says. “The center has grown from three to nine secure rooms, along with excellent office spaces and a welcoming environment for researchers.” Workshops and visits The second workstream aims to understand and improve the management of international research grants between Insper and the University of Aberdeen. Between September 29 and October 2, 2025, Juliana Juk Susnik and Carolina Nakamura, from Insper’s Research Office, and Jucilene Lopes dos Santos, from the CDIA, visited the University of Aberdeen to advance this effort, which made significant progress during this latest visit in March 2026. “We had the opportunity to meet with the Research Office, the legal team, and the finance team to learn about Insper’s research management processes,” says Sharon. “We were also able to plan the next phase of workstream 2 and outline a series of workshops between teams from both institutions to enhance inter-institutional knowledge and improve ways of working together to support international research collaborations.” The agenda also included visits to the University of São Paulo’s Faculty of Medicine Foundation to learn about its structure for managing funding in public institutions, and to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, where discussions with the research management office team provided an overview of their processes. “We also met with researchers from the School of Nursing and from Hospital Sírio-Libanês who are interested in collaborating with researchers from the University of Aberdeen,” adds Katie."},{"jcr:title":"Jucilene Santos (CDIA, Insper), Carolina Nakamura (Research Office, Insper), Suelane Fontes (CDIA, Insper), Katie Wilde (Aberdeen), Sharon Gordon (Aberdeen)","alt":"Jucilene Santos (CDIA, Insper), Carolina Nakamura (Research Office, Insper), Suelane Fontes (CDIA, Insper), Katie Wilde (Aberdeen), Sharon Gordon (Aberdeen)"},{"text":"Co-creation of solutions According to Suelane Garcia Fontes, Manager of the CDIA, who had previously visited the University of Aberdeen in 2023, this new visit represents a milestone in strengthening international collaboration between the institutions. “The exchange of experiences allows us to move forward in building a model of secure environments for accessing and sharing sensitive data across institutions and countries, in alignment with global best practices,” she says. “This progress includes enabling a bidirectional data access flow, securely and with proper governance, allowing researchers to access data under Aberdeen’s responsibility while also accessing data managed by the CDIA. More than sharing knowledge, we are co-creating solutions that expand the potential of evidence-based research without borders, generating direct impact on society,” she adds. Vinícius Cassio Barqueiro, Manager of Insper’s Research Office, notes that collaboration with the University of Aberdeen is likely to strengthen the mechanisms that support scientific production. “This partnership seeks to reduce operational barriers by improving processes such as funding, contracts, and reporting, allowing researchers to focus more on scientific output. At the same time, Insper contributes knowledge of the Brazilian context, experience in applied research, and connections with other institutions,” he says. “By strengthening structures such as data governance, compliance, and international project management, we enable more robust, secure research with greater potential for international collaboration. It is a partnership built on exchange and joint development,” he adds. Next steps Barqueiro notes that the focus going forward is to consolidate learnings into institutional processes and guidelines, while continuing to strengthen integration between the Research Office and other areas at Insper. “Our mission is to expand our collaboration network and position Insper as a reference in research management,” he says. “We are very excited about the next steps in both workstreams of the INSPERation project and the possibility of connecting our researchers to generate new research collaborations,” says Sharon Gordon. “The partnership between Insper and the University of Aberdeen is at an excellent stage. The INSPERation team has developed strong working relationships and friendships and looks forward to working even more closely together in the future, while supporting new research collaborations between our institutions.” Katie Wilde adds that, from the perspective of workstream 1, the next step is to finalize and submit papers for publication. “We are also very excited about potential data linkage research collaborations that were initially discussed during this visit, involving both the Grampian Data Safe Haven (DaSH) at the University of Aberdeen and the Center for Data and Artificial Intelligence here at Insper,” she says. “We believe that the support from the British Academy lays the foundation for future data-driven research projects between the institutions, benefiting both and generating outcomes that improve people’s health in Scotland and Brazil.”"},{"jcr:title":"Teams from the University of Aberdeen and Insper’s Research Office during a visit to the Research Support Unit at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein","fileName":"Equipe do Insper e Aberdeen no Hospital Albert Einstein.jpeg","alt":"Teams from the University of Aberdeen and Insper’s Research Office during a visit to the Research Support Unit at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein"}]
