As of May 11 the institution adopted the new brand name Insper Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa1 replacing the brand name Ibmec São Paulo. The change will allow the School to differ from the two other homonym Institutions located in Rio de Janeiro (Ibmec and the Instituto Brasileiro de Mercado de Capitais).
The new brand name has been chosen as result of a process, coordinated by the School and advised by the brand consulting firm Interbrand. The consulting firm analyzed the values and mission of the institution, in conjunction with other factors, to select suitable names, which were then submitted to the School’s Board of Directors. Two of these names were chosen to be the final contenders, and were presented to the School’s community (students, Alumni, faculty, collaborators and supporters) for its opinion. The alternative which was, by far, the most preferred, Insper, was then approved by the Board as the new brand name for the School.
The name Insper comes from “to inspire” and “to belong” (pertencer in Portuguese) which, together with “to transform” were considered to be the three basic pillars of our brand. Under this new name, the institution assumes a unique identity. However, its mission, vision, values, governance, educational approach and objectives remain absolutely the same.
The new name will be communicated to the public through a series of events along the year, such as academic seminars, debates, and lectures, targeted at different groups of stakeholders of the school. The change to the new brand name will also be the subject of a campaign developed by the advertising agency DM9DDB, under the theme: Names change, values remain.
The Corporate name has also been changed to Insper Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa, instead of Instituto Veris. Its status of a non profit institution is unchanged.
Ibmec São Paulo has its origins in the Instituto Brasileiro de Mercado de Capitais (Ibmec), founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1970 with the intention of fostering research and knowledge to help the development of capital markets in Brazil. IBMEC started its educational activities in 1985 offering executive MBA’s and, subsequently, undergraduate programs in Business and Economics, in Rio de Janeiro and in São Paulo. In 1999 the educational activities of IBMEC were acquired and contributed to a newly formed company, Ibmec Educacional S.A. The Instituto, however, continued to exist, sponsoring research on capital markets, under the same brand name IBMEC.
In 2004, following a governance restructuring, Ibmec Educacional S.A. became Veris Educacional S.A. , the São Paulo branch was spun off and donated to Instituto Veris (an independent, newly created, non-profit organization) and, thereafter, denominated Ibmec São Paulo. However, the name Ibmec, remained a proprietary brand of Veris Educacional, which is a for profit company maintaining, among other educational institutions, the Ibmec branches in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and in other places of the country. Hence, the Ibmec brand name continued to be used by those three independent institutions.
After some time debating that issue in various forums, the School’s Board strongly recommended that it would be more appropriate to find a new name of the School, reflecting its unique identity. The changing process started in April 2008 and now reaches its conclusion.
¹The use of the new name Insper Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa in the School’s academic documents, replacing Ibmec São Paulo, is pending approval by the Ministry of Education.
